Another financial year over and it seems as though the mining resource sector is once again propping up Australia. Most of the businesses that have enjoyed success over the past year have been in some way connected to the resource sector.
One of the humorous outcomes of the successful boom in this sector is that recently the Lonely Planet travel guide has labelled West Australia as a place full of “Cashed up Bogan’s”. For you international readers that may not be familiar with the term ‘Bogan’s” The term bogan is Australian slang, usually pejorative or self-deprecating, for an individual who is recognised to be from a lower class background or someone whose limited education, speech, clothing, attitude and behavior exemplifies such a background and a “cashed up bogan” (CUB) is usually a person of a blue-collar back ground now earning a high salary and spending their earnings on expensive consumer items as a matter of conspicuous consumption.
A lot of West Australians are quite upset with this tag, and although my experience when travelling I have found the lonely planet guide more of a hindrance than help due to its misleading content, there may be an element of truth in the tag, honestly WA is not “FULL” of cashed up bogan’s. However……….due to the mining boom and the higher salaries the Blue collar workers are earning we do seem to have a disproportionate amount of guys with mullet haircuts and goatee beards driving around in $80K high performance utes with expensive boats or jet skis in tow along with the essential accessory of twin pedigree bull terrier dogs with diamante studded collars hanging out of the window.
At least these guys are pumping their cash back into the struggling retail sector and enjoying their spoils.
Take care, and hope you have a successful 2011-2012.
